FFmpeg Hosting and how ffmpeg conversion affects RAM & CPU

Sunday, May 25th, 2008

FFmpeg Conversion is CPU intensive and shared hosting plans usually have fairly low limits on both RAM and CPU usage. IMO, Siteground is doing the right thing by not allowing/offering FFMPEG on a shared server plan. It’s both a disservice to other people who are sharing the host server with you and to you when you get shut off because you are exceeding your alloted resource usage. A lot of shared hosting companies offer tons of bandwidth and hd space because they know you will run up on other limits before you use up the limits that they do advertise in large print.

Initially, a VPS may be a cost effective option until you can justify a dedicated server. Just make sure you get one with enough memory and find out what kind of hardware the VPS is running on, including CPUs, and what share of the CPU you are guaranteed.

Unless your familiar with compiling apps, you may want to find out if they will install it for you too. Just make sure the codecs you need are compiled into FFMPEG.
